Steamed cabbage is super easy to make. You don't need a steamer for this method. And the recipe works for both green and red/purple cabbage.
I don't like my food bland. So I use a few ingredients to make a simple buttery glaze– for added flavor. But you can skip it all and just season with salt.
Begin by making butter glaze. Add garlic, white pepper, caraway seeds and salt to melted butter and mix. Microwave in two 15-second spurts, stirring in between.
Add water, vinegar and sliced cabbage to a pot or pan.
Put the lid, turn up the heat to medium high. Once you see steam forming inside, lower the heat to medium-low and let it steam for 8 to 9 minutes.
Remove the lid and let any excess water evaporate. But don't let the cabbage become too dry or it will stick to the bottom.
Add the prepared butter glaze. Mix well. You can also skip the glaze altogether and just season with salt and pepper at this stage.
Mix, mix, mix. Cook on lowest heat for 3 to 4 minutes while stirring. Squeeze some fresh lime/lemon on top and garnish with chopped fresh herbs. Enjoy!
– Don't slice the cabbage too thin. – Set a timer when steaming. – Use a non-stick pot, pan or skillet.
